Information Hiding

The sensitivity of information is the cost arising from information getting into the wrong hands. Hackers often steal or destroy private or confidential data simply because it is visible. What if we make this confidential information hidden?

  • All information you enter via the web can be intercepted

  • Your browsing activity can be tracked and monitored

  • Your personal information can be sold to other parties without your knowledge or consent

Steganography attempts to solve this dilemma. One of the goals of steganography is to hide messages in other messages in a way that does not allow the enemy to detect there is a secret message present.

A good steganography system should fulfil the same requirements posed by the Kerckhoffprinciple in cryptography that security of a system should not rely on the on its method of operation being unknown to the enemy, but rather on the choice of a secret key

There are a few ways of hiding data in audio; the basic process involves coding the data to allow for error correction. In order to prevent unauthorised users the data can be encrypted and a random key can also be generated. This key must be known to both the encoder and the decoder to properly recover the data. The appendix contains a stego source code.
